How to optimize your Google Business Profile listing?

Check your eligibility, categories, address, opening hours, services, and reviews for your Google Business Profile listing without promises of ranking.

An accurate Google Business Profile listing helps customers understand which business they have found, where it welcomes them or operates, and how to contact it. Optimizing it begins with eligibility and the accuracy of information, not with adding keywords or searching for a formula to guarantee a better position on Google Maps.

The rules and options displayed may depend on the type of establishment or the category. Check official guidelines before modifying data that represents the business.

Confirming eligibility and the authorized person

Google reserves listings for businesses that meet their customers directly under the conditions provided by its rules. Exclusively online activities are not eligible; a business that travels to its customers must faithfully represent its mode of operation and area. A P.O. box or a remote address used only to display an establishment does not replace a real presence.

Only the owner or an authorized representative should claim and manage the listing. If it already exists, search for it before creating another for the same establishment. Verification methods are offered by Google and depend in particular on the business, public information, and the region; they cannot be chosen as an SEO shortcut.

Representing the name, address, and hours accurately

Use the name under which the business is actually known, as it appears in its representation elements. Do not add a city, a list of services, or a tagline to the name just to target queries. Google also recommends one listing per real establishment; avoid duplicates that describe the same presence.

Indicate the address where customers can actually visit, if the business receives them there. If the business travels to them, describe an area actually served and do not present a location that does not welcome customers as such. Monitor regular hours and special hours so that they match the information provided on-site and on the website.

The website, contact details, and listing must describe the same activity. If an address changes or if an establishment closes, correct the information that is no longer valid rather than keeping several competing versions.

Choosing categories that describe the main activity

Select the main category best suited to the establishment's central activity, then add only the secondary categories that are truly useful and offered in the interface. Google recommends using the fewest categories possible to describe the main activity. Categories are neither a list of keywords nor an inventory of all the tasks that the business can sometimes perform.

After a category change, check the listing and associated information again. Google may request re-verification when certain information, including the category, is modified.

Filling out services, products, and photos without exaggerating

Certain establishments can present services or products directly on their listing; the possibilities vary according to the categories. Publish only services actually offered and information that the team can confirm. If an option does not appear in the listing interface, do not promise that it will be available for all establishments.

Use recent and representative photos of the relevant premises, products, achievements, or teams. They can help a customer recognize the activity; do not present them as a guarantee of positioning. Before publication, check rights, the privacy of individuals, and the absence of outdated information.

Managing reviews according to Google's rules

A business can invite its customers to share an authentic experience, for example by providing them with the official link to reviews. The request must remain free and neutral: do not offer a discount or gift, do not solicit only satisfied customers, do not discourage negative reviews, and do not ask for a specific rating or predefined text.

Respond professionally, without revealing personal information. If a review describes a real difficulty, check the file and indicate a way to continue the conversation in private. If you believe a review violates the rules, use the reporting procedure; a negative rating alone is not a violation.

For the details of these practices, consult the guide on Google reviews and local SEO.

    Following available data without over-interpreting

Google Business Profile can display different metrics: searches, views, and interactions such as clicks to the website or calls. Only metrics applicable to the establishment are displayed, and some data may be updated with a delay. A click on the call button is not necessarily a successful call; a view does not automatically represent a new customer.

To analyze the searches that bring up the site, also use Search Console. Separate the site data, the listing data, and the commercial actions measured by the business. The local SEO guide explains how to link this information without confusing it.

    Fictional example: a plumbing business

Entirely fictional situation: a plumbing business has a workshop where it receives customers at certain hours and also travels for interventions. The person managing the listing first confirms their authorization, then verifies that the address corresponds well to the workshop open to the public. They correct public holiday hours, choose the categories corresponding to their main activity, and keep only the services actually offered.

They then invite all their customers to leave an authentic review, without gifts or filtering based on their satisfaction. Finally, they compare the listing interactions with the requests received, without equating the number of clicks to sales. This example is not an observed result and does not predict any ranking.
