SEO Benchmark: Which indicators to compare?

Compare your pages and those of the market using contextualized indicators, separating measured data, third-party estimates, and hypotheses.

    By FlowPoint Team

An SEO benchmark compares a site and competing pages within a defined scope. Its quality depends more on comparability than on the number of metrics. An estimated position, a Search Console click, and an analytics conversion are different types of observations; do not add them into a single score without an explicit methodology.

    IndicatorPossible utilityLimitation
Queries and visible pagesIdentify topics and formats present in results. The observation depends on the query, date, and context.
Own clicks and impressionsTrack your property's performance in Search Console. This data does not reveal a competitor's private analytics.
Third-party visibility estimatesCompare trends calculated in an external database.Coverage, model, and accuracy vary by provider.
Observed content and experienceCompare the response and elements available on a page.An observed difference does not prove a ranking cause.
Separate verifiable internal data from estimates derived from third-party tools.

    Setting the scope before comparison

Select relevant queries, pages, and market. Specify the location, language, date, result type, and collection mode. Compare pages that address a similar need; an entire domain may contain very different sections and audiences.

Your own Search Console can provide performance metrics for the verified property. A third-party tool that estimates another site's traffic does not have access to its private sessions or revenue. Clearly identify the source in each table.

Avoiding ranking competitors via a magic score

An aggregate score can hide discrepancies between queries, pages, and methods. Present dimensions separately, flag estimated values, and avoid interpreting a difference as proof that specific content, a link, or a feature produced a better ranking.

To identify pages to compare, read the SEO competitor guide; to understand the origin of queries, consult the competitor keyword analysis.

Entirely fictional example: comparing two service pages

A fictional company examines two pages visible for a service search. It notes their date, intent, information provided, and estimates displayed by a third-party tool, marking them as such. It then decides whether its own content sufficiently answers visitor questions. No real figures or results are reported in this fictional example.

Presenting the benchmark as a decision-making tool

A benchmark can reveal a question to explore: is an important page missing, does the content have verifiable proof, or is the offer clear enough? It does not prove that a specific modification will improve rankings. Define a modest action, its owner, and the source that will allow for monitoring the results.
